Les Bushinengé – Nèg Mawon de Guyane

Abstract : For the Bushinengé, the word “music” is a generic term. It reflects a reality with multiple meanings, artistic and non-musical. For them, musical material has real meaning only in interaction and in interrelation, notably with a specific place, circumstance and context, or even a particular object. Moreover, the term “music” is here a counterpart of the noun “dance”. Both have meaning only when all parameters that compose them — musical, choreographic and beyond — are taken into account. Woven everywhere into the social fabric of daily life, music is therefore the driving force that regulates a complex set of relationships, rich in symbols and meanings.
