Moulin à sucre merveilleux, machine à vapeur parodique : Reinaldo Arenas lecteur baroque d’Alejo Carpentier

Abstract : Many of Reinaldo Arenas’s writings deal with Alejo Carpentier’s works. As in El mundo alucinante (1969), Arenas’s comments take the form of parody and satire. Thus the writer imitates Carpentiers’s style and mocks the prominent public figure. In El color del verano o Nuevo « Jardín de las Delicias » (1991), Arenas denudes the baroque aesthetics of both the essay La ciudad de las columnas (1970) and the novel El siglo de las luces (1962). Moreover, this paper points out a more sophisticated link between Arenas’s La loma del ángel (1987) and Carpentier’s El reino de este mundo (1949). That is to say Arenas transforms El Reino’s marvelous sugar mill into a parodic steam machine. In doing so, he exhibits the core of Carpentier’s real maravilloso poetics. Yet the works of Reinaldo Arenas stand themselves as comic baroque rewritings. Finally, through the use of parody Arenas questions the political reception of baroque and real maravilloso aesthetics.
