Quelques questions posées à l'anthropologie médicale par la Guyane

Abstract : Medical science advances swiftly when it comes to the knowledge of the causes and the biological effects of diseases. But what is often underestimated is the fact that an illness is not only an individual's problem, and this aspect is not without consequences on the efficiency of the treatments of many a pathology. What is even more often neglected is the patient's life experience and representations, although such factors weigh heavily on the patient's behavior with respect to forms of treatment. Due to its geographical milieu, to the ancient and recent history of its population, and to the rapid changes of its health system, French Guiana is particularly concerned with these issues. This article sketches a presentation of the problems that medical anthropology needs to tackle in that territory. The bibliography lists some important studies going in that direction.
